KITCHEN TAKEOVER AT GEMA GALLERY OCTOBER-DECEMBER
KITCHEN TAKEOVER AT GEMA GALLERY OCTOBER-DECEMBER
El Proceso de la Memoria
Cyanotype Exhibition & Workshop
by Naomi Duarte
Presented by KITCHEN Studios
As part of the KITCHEN Takeover, celebrating 10 years of GEMA Art Gallery,
organised by Gibraltar Cultural Services
KITCHEN Studios presents El Proceso de la Memoria, a cyanotype exhibition by artist Naomi Duarte, forming part of the KITCHEN Takeover programme celebrating the 10th anniversary of GEMA Art Gallery, organised by Gibraltar Cultural Services. The exhibition explores the fragile relationship between personal memory, collective history, and material process through the cyanotype photographic method.
Drawing from personal family archives alongside images connected to Gibraltar’s history, Duarte approaches cyanotype as both a technical and conceptual medium. Dependent on light, time, and chemical reaction, the process becomes a metaphor for memory itself shaped through exposure, altered through repetition, and marked by absence. The works are produced through experimentation on a range of surfaces and everyday objects, allowing materiality to actively influence how images are formed, degraded, and read. In revisiting both private and public histories, the work invites reflection on how narratives are inherited, obscured, and continually reinterpreted.
Alongside the exhibition, Naomi Duarte will lead a cyanotype workshop, on Thursday 18th December 2025 offering participants an introduction to the process while encouraging hands-on experimentation with found images, objects, and alternative materials. The workshop mirrors the exhibition’s ethos: slow, tactile, and process-led, privileging exploration over perfection. Find out more and book your spot at gibkitchen.com

With over eight years of experience working in cyanotype, Naomi will guide participants through the fundamentals of this historic photographic process, known for its rich blue tones and hands-on, experimental approach. The workshop will cover preparing light-sensitive chemical materials, creating compositions using natural or found objects or photographic negatives, and developing prints using light and water.
Designed for complete beginners, the session offers practical, easy takeaways to help you continue exploring this medium beyond the workshop. No prior experience is required.
All materials will be provided, and participants will leave with their own cyanotype prints or can display them at GEMA.

CERAMIC WORKSHOP BY ERMELINDA
Ermelinda Duarte is a renowned Ceramic Artist who is known for her collaborative works involving the community with current topics. She invites the audience to come down to GEMA and get involved in making their mark on her recycled clay.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Food is essential to our growth and survival. Beyond nourishment, it brings friends, families, and communities together. It carries with it emotions, memories, and nostalgia—so many associations that shape our lives.
Its misuse and waste contribute to the environment, starvation, famine, and poverty. It can be tied to animal cruelty and, tragically, even used as a weapon of war.
The spoon, a universal symbol of food, becomes a powerful way to reflect on these truths. I invite the public to join me in this project: to collaborate in making clay spoons while sharing your own thoughts, stories, and reflections on food within the piece. Book now ! Limited spaces available!
