KITCHEN RETURNING TO GEMA

16/03/2021

The KITCHEN project began as an idea for an open studio space and gallery project in the summer of 2014. In 2015 we were given the opportunity to use the Listen to the Sirens space (now known as GEMA) for a month and a half during the Summer. The KITCHEN project didn’t only serve as a place where people could work and display their projects but also perform. During our month and a half-long stint we didn’t only learn about each other, those that actively participated, but we made new friends, took up new artistic endeavours and really learnt about putting together shows, bringing artists together and collaborating on projects.

Five years and many pop-ups, collaborations and workshops later and we find ourselves in a year where instead of celebrating our milestone anniversary we’ve had to put everything on hold. Despite all the difficulties this global pandemic has posed, our dream of re-opening KITCHEN in the original location for another open studio stint has almost become a reality in a last-minute decision and we have been given a couple of weeks of lead-up to Christmas to use the space and put on a show.

We might not be able to have a fancy anniversary party, or a flashy opening event like we would have really liked to and were really excited to have, but at least we can show of the off the work of eighteen of our friends, from familiar faces to new collaborators, so make sure you come along and have a look at what is out there in local contemporary art, from spray cans to needles and threads. We hope you enjoy the show and we hope to be able to come back, post-pandemic, for a well-deserved celebration of Gibraltarian contemporary art.
